Heat Pump Servicing in NZ 2026: What a Spring Clean Costs — and Whether It Cuts Your Power Bill

Here's an uncomfortable pair of facts about the winter that just ended. Earth Sciences New Zealand confirmed on 4 September that winter 2026 was the country's third-warmest on record — 9.7°C nationally, 1.1°C above the 1991–2020 average, beaten only by 2022 and 2021 in a record going back to 1909. And yet on 7 August, national electricity demand hit an all-time peak of 7,415 MW, and the Electricity Authority reported household and small-business power bills rose 6.8% on average across the first half of 2026.

So a lot of New Zealanders just paid record money to heat their homes through an unusually mild winter. Spring is when the servicing vans come out, and the pitch writes itself: get your heat pump cleaned, cut your bill. This article gives you the real 2026 prices, what a service actually includes, and an honest answer on whether it pays for itself — which is not the answer most servicing companies will give you.

  • Servicing rarely pays for itself on electricity savings alone. For a typical lounge unit, a $150 service would need to cut running costs by roughly a third to break even in a single year. It won't.
  • It does pay for itself on the things nobody advertises — compressor longevity, warranty conditions, air quality, and not replacing a $4,000 unit three years early.
  • The free part captures most of the efficiency. Cleaning your own filters monthly through the heating season is the single highest-value maintenance action, and it costs nothing.
  • Be sceptical of the big percentages. The "a dirty unit uses 20–30% more power" figures on installer websites come from overseas HVAC research on badly fouled systems, not from EECA or any New Zealand study.
  • Spring is the right time to book. September–October sits between the heating and cooling seasons, so you get better availability and you're not competing with the first 30°C day in December.

Why Your Bill Was High in a Warm Winter

Understanding this is what tells you whether servicing is your problem or not.

The 6.8% average increase the Electricity Authority measured was driven mostly by lines charges, which made up 54% of it. Lines charges are what you pay to have the poles, wires and transformers exist — they are largely fixed, billed daily, and they do not care whether your heat pump is spotless or caked in three years of dust. About 22% of households saw no price change at all; for those that did, bills went up 8.7% on average.

That matters because it splits your bill into two piles. The fixed pile you cannot clean your way out of. The variable pile — the cents-per-kWh part — is the only bit servicing touches, and it's a minority of the increase.

For reference, MBIE's quarterly survey put the national average residential electricity price at 39.3 c/kWh including GST as at February 2026, though that figure spreads fixed daily charges across consumption, so your pure per-unit rate is lower. Regional spread is wide: Wellington was cheapest at 34.61 c/kWh, Balclutha dearest at 48.93 c/kWh.

What a Real Service Actually Includes

The word "service" covers everything from a teenager with a can of spray to a proper two-hour job. What you should be paying for:

  • Indoor filters removed, washed, dried and refitted
  • Indoor coil cleaned — the fins behind the filter, where dust that got past the filter settles
  • Fan barrel de-moulded — the rotating drum that pushes air into the room, and the single grubbiest component in most NZ heat pumps
  • Drain pan and drain line cleared, so condensate leaves the unit rather than pooling
  • Outdoor coil washed down — leaves, dust, salt spray and lawn clippings sitting in the fins
  • Performance check — refrigerant pressures, supply air temperature, electrical connections
  • A written condition report telling you what state the unit is in

That last one is worth insisting on. It's the difference between a service and a wipe-down, and it's what tells you whether you're maintaining a unit with years left or postponing a replacement.

If a quote is at the $89 end, ask specifically whether the fan barrel and outdoor coil are included. Often they aren't — and the fan barrel is the whole reason to pay somebody.

The Honest Efficiency Maths

Here's where most articles on this topic get enthusiastic and stop being useful.

It is genuinely true that restricted airflow and fouled coils make a heat pump work harder for the same heat. Overseas HVAC research broadly supports increases in the range of 5–15% for a heavily clogged filter, with larger numbers for systems that are badly fouled across both coils. What does not exist is a New Zealand study putting a firm number on it. The 20–30% figures you'll see quoted are marketing extrapolations from the worst-case end of overseas testing. Treat them as an upper bound on a neglected unit, not as your expected saving.

Now run the payback. Say your lounge heat pump costs $400 a year to run — a reasonable mid-range figure for a single wall unit in a NZ home:

  • A $150 service needs to cut that by 37% to pay back within one year. Nothing short of a catastrophically fouled unit gets near that.
  • Spread over the two to three years a proper service is good for, it needs roughly 12–19%. Achievable on a genuinely filthy unit; unlikely on one whose filters you've been washing.
  • A ducted system at $350 to service but $1,000+ a year to run needs about 17% over two years — the maths is friendlier, because the running cost is bigger and ducted systems get dirtier in places you can't reach.

The conclusion, stated plainly: if you are buying a service purely as an energy-saving measure on a wall unit you've maintained, the numbers don't support it. Buy it as maintenance — for the compressor, the warranty and the air you breathe — and the energy saving is a bonus rather than the business case.

The Part That Isn't About Money

The fan barrel and drain pan are dark, damp and rarely dry out completely. They grow mould. The unit then blows that air into your living room every time it runs.

That's a real consideration in a country where damp housing is a chronic problem — the Aotearoa Renters' Survey released in August 2026 found 42.7% of respondents reporting mould, damp or draughts in homes they'd been told met the healthy homes standards. If your heat pump smells musty for the first minute after startup, that smell is the fan barrel, and no filter clean will fix it. That's a genuine reason to pay somebody, independent of any power-bill argument.

Do the Free Things First

Before you book anything, spend fifteen minutes:

  1. Pull and wash the indoor filters. Lift the front panel, slide them out, rinse under the tap, dry fully, refit. Do this monthly through the heating season.
  2. Look behind the filters at the coil fins. Furry and grey means a professional clean is due.
  3. Clear the outdoor unit. Leaves, weeds, stacked firewood — anything within about half a metre of the coil restricts airflow.
  4. Sniff test on startup. Musty smell means the fan barrel needs doing.
  5. Check it still holds temperature. If you needed a plug-in heater alongside it this winter, servicing is not your issue — sizing or age is.

When Servicing Is the Wrong Place to Spend

Sometimes the $150 is money thrown at the wrong problem:

  • The unit is 12+ years old. Replacement gets you a far bigger efficiency gain than any clean. A 2010-era unit runs at a real-world winter COP around 2.2–2.6 against 3.3–3.7 for a new one.

  • The house is uninsulated or draughty. No amount of servicing beats getting heat to stay in the building.

On that last point, check the subsidies before you spend anything. What to Do This Month

  • Wash your filters today. It's free and it's most of the benefit.
  • Book a professional service if it's been three or more years, the unit smells musty, you're near the coast, or you've got a ducted system.
  • Get two quotes and compare inclusions, not just price. Ask directly: fan barrel, drain, outdoor coil, written report. A $220 job that does all four beats a $99 job that does none.
  • Do it in September or October, while installers have capacity.
  • If the unit is over twelve years old, get a replacement quote alongside the service quote and compare them properly.

Servicing is ordinary home maintenance, and it's worth doing on that basis. Just don't let anyone sell it to you as the fix for a bill that went up because lines charges did.
